One of my students pointed this out to me the other day... They were using InDesign 2025 (MAC and PC). I tried it on my end, I was usin InDesign 2024 (just the MAC).

  1.  I created a 'Facing Pages' document with 8 pages, and it stuck like that
  2. I created a 'Primary Pages' document with 8 pages, and if I either wait a second or click on any pages
thumbnails, it changes to 1 page document!

See the attached video. Is this something new for 'Primary Pages'

I've tried several times here and can't replicate it in 2024 or 2025

Mac OS 14.4.1

Fact it's happening on Mac and PC is concerning. But hard to know what's going on.

@Eugene Tyson thanks for trying! I originally thought I was imaging this...until I did tried it myself. Shoot, I was hoping yu had the same issue. I have done the usual stuff, reset my preferences, restart IndDesign and the MAC, etc

And you have the latest patches for inDesign installed for each version?

Have you tried resetting preferences? (I'm surprised Eugene didn't mention this)

@Peter Spier if you read my reply to @Eugene Tyson , I already reset my preferences. And I am using InDesign 2024 for a reason (my MAC can't do 2025) while my student has the latest and greatest 2025 on their MAC and PC.
Thanks for the reminder though🥰

Sorry, I did see you reset prefs. Sometimes weird stuff happens when importing prefs from the previous version, and this sounds like it could be that. Might be worth doing the full manual reset as outlined at Reset InDesign Preferences and Other Troubleshooting

So your student has a newer Mac than you? There are a lot of bugs being reported with 2025 on Mac and many are supposed to be fixed with updates to both InDesign and Mac OS, so again I suggest you check to be sure that you have actuall installed the latest patches. Also the nuclear solution of runnning the cleaner tool (Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool to solve installation problems ) and reinstalling might be worth a try.

I tried in 2025 on Mac - and worked as expected. Then installed latest patch and it still worked.

Same with 2024.

I use 2022 - and that's all up to date and works as expected too.

@Peter Spier welcome to my world where parents can buy their children the latest and greatest MACs or PCs. As instructors, we have to buy our own gear or use the computers in the lab?! Thanks but no thanks to PC Windows 10! I rather use my gear, even it means I don't have the latest 2025 apps, I use 2024.

Okay, thanks for the clearer explanations!

Been there, and I hear you. For a point of reference, I still do 99.9% of my production work in InDesign CS6 on Windows 10.

@Peter Spier Okay, I checked my InDesign, and I have the latest InDesign as possible, 19.5.1. My preferences was reset. And I tried again, create a multi-page file with Primary Text frames on, and the same issues, it converts to a one pager.

Then, I wondered out loud and thought about the workspace.

I had reset my custom workspaces. And I tried again and same issues. A multi-page file with Primary Text frames on, and the same issues, it converts to a one pager.

Then, for some reason, I picked Essentials Classic workspace. And the issue went away!
I went back to the one I created in class, and it was fine as well!

Pretty glitchy or what!

That's very interesting. You should report it as a bug. Feature Request/Bug Report Form

I'm not ceertain the link I posted still actually works to get things reported, but it's still active.

In any case, wherever you report, be sure you link to this discussion.
