Embarrassing: Every update resets settings

Explorer ,
May 07, 2025 May 07, 2025

Im on the brink of waving InDesign goodbye, when this happens ever egain.

After Updating InDesign to 20.3.1 every window with a previous checked "preview"-checkbox gets reverted to unchecked – Every. Effin. Update.

Is this really neccessary??

Hi Jan,

Justed wanted to chime in and say I agree with you. It annoys me, too ... a lot!

I have suggested making it switchable in Preferences. All on at once would suit me.

The fact that preferences are reset is actually a good thing in the long run. Using older preferences that were attached to an earlier coded version of the program has been shown to more often than not lead to serious performance issues with the newer version. Having to reset things each time is admittedly annoying but the alternative is usually worse.

Bang-wrong: The preferences do stay, eveything fine with that, also workspace and pallettes.
Only dialog boxes are affected.  Evey update. Thats bad UX.

Instead of just sweeping my settings, ill exspect Adobe to a.) ask if this can be resetted. Or b.) just house these settings into a save-file like the preferences, which gets carried over.

to make this clearer:

  • It happens on major and minor updates
  • Major updates ask to carry preferences over and if old InD wants to be kept
  • Minor updates just update

So, why ditch dialog settings??

To respect your answer: A better UX would be if only dialog boxes loose their settings, to which Adobe did any changes to.

Also, im unable to edit my posts 🙄

It sounds like you have auto updates enabled for InDesign. You can shut this off in the Creative Cloud Desktop app and only update when you see fit. In the desktop app go to the Apps section and click on the 3 horizontal dots in the upper right of the screen and choose Manage Auto updates. In the dialog window that appears deselect auto updates. Now you can update only when you feel its necessary.

Thank you, great and all, but that wasnt the problem. I dont have any app on auto-update. It just happens, if I roll out the update by myself or if CC auto-updates.

So, it doesnt come unexspected. But Im again and again deeply disappointed in theis so-called professional software, update after update.

Then my suggestion would be to submit this as a feature request at https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601021-adobe-indesign-feature-requests. The people who code the program are usually not regular users so suggestions for improvements from people who use it on a day to day basis are the best way to make the apps more efficient.
