Hi Steven,

We are sorry to hear about this. There are multiple factors both internal and external to InDesign application that can lead to document corruption. However, we can take a look and see if the file can be repaired. Please email your InDesign file to corrupt_indesign_docs@adobe.com and we will take a look at the document.

If the file is larger than 10 Mb, you can zip (and password protect) the file and upload to Creative Cloud account (or Dropbox) and send us the document link

Just like a doctor can not always say what caused the symptoms, they can offer best advice standards for prevention. For instance, the typical items such as; system up to date along with all software used in the process, enough hard-disk space for scratch disks, etc. Sometimes new versions of software can cause issues though too, so one must be careful.

It is hard to say what actually caused your InDesign file to go corrupt, but it comes down to these likely causes:

* Corrupt Font(s) (or corrupt font caches - see below)

* Corrupt Image(s)

* Power Failure

* Placing images via drag-and-drop from an Internet page

  - Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLM08sT_F3U

* Embedding graphic or images and not linking them

  -Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP6hDBC-JPI

* Copying and Pasting Images from Word, PowerPoint, etc into InDesign

  - Watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSS0Llx4VEs

* Copying and Pasting text from Word, PowerPoint, etc into InDesign

* Working on an InDesign file over a network or on a remote server

     - This can be dangerous, even though I know, popular!

Here is a video on how to tackle the font caches of InDesign, which is good to do once and a while anyway:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf5ZuiaYgus

For checking individual font files (fonts are like mini apps really), we recommend either FontExplorer XPro or Extensis Suitcase Fusion 4, with the later perhaps the more popular of the two.

Deleting your InDesign preferences can also fix some odd issues. To delete the InDesign Preferences hold down shift+option+command+control on a Mac or shift+ctrl+alt on WIndows while starting up InDesign. Also, at times, "advanced type" prefs can better be turned off if your experiencing performance issues.

Hopefully this assists.

Friendly Regards,

David Dilling

P.S. Adobe's tips, which I more geared towards files that are fixable in the traditional sense:

I must also inform that file recovery can't be guaranteed with a 100% success. We'll surely try our best.

Hi, i have the same problem.

I sent the file 2 times to the e-mail address you provided. No response to this date. I am reasonably concerned about the processing of this file. Can you check if the file has been sent to the correct email address. My email address is: [Removed by MOD]Thanks, Hans Koevoets

In case of Error Code 5 when you try to open an InDesign document, see into a possible solution below.

Big thanks to Kasyan Servetsky who posted this on his website!

INDDRecovery — a program for restoring corrupted InDesign documents
Platform: Windows, Author: Mikhail Kondakov

"The current version of the program checks the integrity of the document’s block structure and corrects it.

In some cases this allows you to repair a file which InDesign is unable to open with Error code:5."
