Export differences between Illustrator and Indesign

Does anyone know why when I export the same file from illustrator and indesign I get drastically different file sizes and quality? A JPEG exported from illustrator is both lower quality and higher file size than if the same design is exported from indesign. The file contains a photo, some text, and a few graphics.

Some offtop: I do prefer to do PDF from ai/indd and then do jpg from Acrobat Pro if want something good without strange bugs.

Remember, never say you can't do something in InDesign, it's always just a question of finding the right workaround to get the job done. © David Blatner

Ive never heard of this workflow before so I just tried it for the first time and the quality looks great. However the JPEG came out at 100 dpi and my pixels were still increased. Is there anyway to export the PDF as a JPEG while remaining at 72 dpi?

Because InDesign and Illustrator are two totally different applications. Trying to get them to export files the exact same size is an exercise in futility.

Should I conclude that indesign is the better application to use when exporting the sort of design I am using then?

While you may find one or the other more suited to a particular objective you have at the moment, one is not necessarily "better" than the other in a general sense. Each does its intended purpose as designed. Frankly, JPEG output is not really an intended workflow for either application; more of an "available option".
