We have a user who continually has crashes when exporting to PDF for certain projects. The user is running the newest 16.1 update and the issues only started when they updated to 16.1 on the morning of  Feb 4th. Reinstalls don't seem to change anything. Is anyone else having this issue only after updating to 16.1?

While I am not having the issues you discussed, I can advise some things you may want to check as you sleuth this issue:

  1. Try to find any differentiators between the files which crash when producing PDFs and the ones that don't — e.g. Do the files use certain fonts, or are the problematic jobs components of InDesign Book compilations? Do they have indexes? Are they generated in particular similar ways, or from the same workstation? Etc.
  2. Try to run smaller output products from those files to see if  the issue can be isolated — for example, if you try to output the PDF file in halves, does one of the two jobs crash, but the other one doesn't? That would indicate it might be something in the file causing the problems, rather than the file itself. Or does neither job crash? Indicating that it could be an issue of a system overdose from data flow.
  3. Try other ways to generate the PDF — can you "print" the PDF using the Adobe PDF printer driver — learn more about this from this link. How about if you create a .ps Postscript print-to-file and translate that into a PDF using Adobe Acrobat Distiller — which you can learn more about from this link.. Note that neither of these are the preferred option for creating your PDF output from InDesign, but are invaluable for sleuthing and troubleshooting PDF output issues with InDesign.

We need to know more information from you to help you past your issues. Knowing what type of computer/operating system/system specification is your user working with, as well as the results from the three steps I outlined above, will help us help you get past your PDF output issues.

We're happy to help. Please let us know what you find and get back with us, and there are a lot of sharp folks around here who can hopefully get you past your problems.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your experience. In addition to some great suggestions given earlier, please try troubleshooting steps given on this community post(https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/resolve-slow-performance-and-unexpected-behavior-of-indesign...). Hope they help to improve the performance of the app.

Regards,

Ashutosh
