Hi. I wonder if anyone can help me.

I have a design (College Prospectus) where each section needs a different colour.

I have some coloured boxes in a group with some white text on top.

I want to change the coloured box.

If I go to

Find/Change | Object | Find Object Format | Fill

and choose the fill colour I want to change

then choose the what I want to change it to.

The change doesn't work.

If I ungroup the text from the box then it does work but I don't want to do this (many groups that would need regrouping again)

Thanks

At the bottom of the Find/Change dialog box is a dropdown menu for Type and a series of buttons. Have you tried these?

I made a test with two copies: On each copy, the stacking order is:

     (top) Paper-colored text

     (middle) Blue filled circle

     (bottom) Red filled rectangle

The only difference was that in the first (upper) copy, the circle and rectangle were grouped, and in the second (lower0 copy, they are not.

Using the same search you used, grouping made no difference. Are you sure there is no other difference between those found and those which were not?

Thank you for getting back to me.

Well, this is interesting.

I wonder if I have found a bug...

I want to change the Yellow to Red:

1. It works if you select Search | Document. I can't use that as it would change other 'yellows' in the document that I don't want to change.

2. It doesn't work if you select Search | Selection

Can you guys reproduce this?

I just ran some tests and I'm getting the same as you. When "Selection" is chosen, an item within a group that is expected to be selected is not. Interesting.

Thanks for checking.

So, a 'Bug' or a 'Feature'?

I am thinking it is a bug. At the very least there should be an option to change items in groups.

Should I report this as a bug or can you guys contact the right people?

Thanks again.

I'm glad you made the distinction between searching Selection and selecting Document.

I'd post it as a (possible) bug in the InDesign User Voice site which is viewed regularly by engineers and product managers:

Hi randomtask1 ,

hm. Just testing with InDesign CC 2019 version 14.0.2.324 on Windows 10.

Could not get "Selection" with Object Find/Change. Just "Document" or "All Documents".

Selected was: Group of elements on the page.

Ah. Solved this issue:

I had to unselect everything, close the Find/Change dialog, first select the group again and finally open Find/Change dialog with the Object tab.

Find-Change-OBJECT-Scope-SELECTION-OF-GROUP-1.PNG

Find-Change-OBJECT-Scope-SELECTION-OF-GROUP-2.PNG

Result: No changes were made.

With "Document" or "All Documents" as scope all rectangles were found and changed.

Voted for fixing the bug.

Also did a comment on UserVoice with a link to this discussion.

Regards,
Uwe
