On large documents I find the grabber hand tool (space bar) defaults to a different system. Instead of scrolling smoothly as normal in small documents, it zooms out and presents a wider view with a red box that can then be moved around to choose the area you want to scroll to.
The problem is that it is incredibly slow even on my very fast and capable machine. It takes ages just to scroll a little to the side when editing. I want to disable it and force the system to scroll more normally.
Is there a preference setting to disable this grabber hand behaviour?
Why does it only happen in large documents?
Thanks

Hi Alan:
It's how you initiate the panning with the Hand tool:

Is there a way to stop it from doing that in the first place?

The feature with the red rectangle is called Power Zoom. To learn how to do it watch this video:

That's great and all, but it doesn't answer the question of whether or not it can be disabled. It says in the video that you need to press ALT with the space bar, but it does it no matter what when I try to move around. This is especially annoying when I only need to go a short distance.
So can it be disabled? Or is this a bug within Indesign?

There is no way to turn off this feature in InDesign.
In the InDesign User Voice website, there is a section called Feature Requests. Someone has already requested a option to turn off this feature. You can vote for this request here:

Awesome, thank you.
