What version of InDesign have you updated to?
What is your OS?
The latest update should solve it.

Hi Bettina,
if you export the document to PDF with a PDF/X-4 preset, will the images be included in the exported PDF?

Strange
Can you try a few things for me
Try resetting your preferences:
The easiest way to reset everything is to delete the InDesign preferences: as soon as InDesign starts to boot hold down Shift, Alt, Ctrl (and Apple/Cmd if working on a Macintosh). A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

If a document is not behaving well then try
File>Export
Choose IDML
Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.
---
Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the
Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
Thanks

We are sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing. Would it be possible for you to package the document and share the download link with us?
Also, please check there should not be any special characters in the image or file name, e.g.," | ". If there are any, please rename & relink them again and see if that helps.
Regards,
Anshul Saini

I found a similiar post made a couple of years ago and it mentions that setting the Display performance to high resolves this problem. Give it a try. The post is mentioned below
