I have linked text frames. The text flows from one frame on page 1 to a frame on page 2 and from there to

a frame on page 3and so on...

Is there a way that in each frame (on the different pages) there will like a "header", like a headline?

So The frame on page one would have formatted text headline "Covid 19 is now Covid 20" and that same text on the "continuation" on page 2 (the second linked textframe) and the next continuation on pg 3? (the third textframe)

Thanks to all!

Susan

Hi Susan,
as Uwe mentioned, there is simple one-click solution.
I guess the important thing here is that the text changes in every instance of the headline when needed to.
You could do a simple find & replace in those scenarios, but where's the fun in that 😉

1) You could work with linked (not threaded!) textframes especially/only for the headline:
- create a textframe only with your headline
- select textframe and go to Edit -> Place and Link. Then place it on the next page. Do that step as often as

Hi Susan,

the only header you could create automatically would be a header of a table that flows from text frame to text frame.

But that also means that all your contents must be part of an InDesign table.

Hi Susan,

I guess the important thing here is that the text changes in every instance of the headline when needed to.
You could do a simple find & replace in those scenarios, but where's the fun in that 😉

1) You could work with linked (not threaded!) textframes especially/only for the headline:
- create a textframe only with your headline
- select textframe and go to Edit -> Place and Link. Then place it on the next page. Do that step as often as necessary
- if the text changes, you simply can refresh all instances of this link via the Links panel (like you would with images)

2) Use a running header variable:
- create a paragraph style for your headline (you should've done that already)
- go to Type -> Text Variables -> Define
- select "Running Header" and click on "Edit"
- select your paragraph style under "Style"
– hit ok and then you can place the variable via Type -> Text Variables -> Insert Variable -> Running Header

This has the advantages of a) automatically being updated when the text with the style applied is changed and b) you won't have to deal with separate textframes. Just simple insert the variable and done.

But this method also has one huge disadvantage – it can't deal with linebreaks. A variable will be smushed into the width of the textframe no matter what.
This feature is in the backlog since 3-4 years and an issue since they were introduced.
