Help: Large InDesign File Constantly Crashing

New Here ,
Oct 27, 2025 Oct 27, 2025

Hello!

I am working on a large file, 92 pages so far. Last week, while trying to fix some hyperlinks, the entire file crashed and was damaged. I was able to restore it from a backup. However, ever since then it crashes whenever I try to edit certain things. I can't touch certain hyperlinks to edit/delete them and now I can't touch the character styles to edit them.

Any advice or insight?

Thank you!

Hi @claire_3045,

Sorry to hear about the crashes with your file. I found your crash report and have shared the logs with the product team for review. I'll update you once I hear back from them. In the meantime, please try saving the file as an IDML (File > Save As > InDesign Markup Language), then reopen that version in InDesign and check if it runs more smoothly.

Looking forward to your update.
Abhishek

Thank you, I appreciate it! The IDML fix has worked for now and lets me edit without crashing. I haven't tried messing with hyperlinks on it though.

Hi @claire_3045:

This is a great time for a gentle reminder: implement a good backup system (to a cloud service like dropbox or to a network drive or a thumb drive). Regularly save the file under new names in one of those locations so that if the file crashes again and your can't recover it, you can open the most recent back-up and pick up from there. How often you do this depends on how much you are willing to risk. Daily is a minimum, hourly isn't too often.

Luckily I have a good backup system and nothing was lost! I am mostly concerned about the crashing when editing hyperlinks and character styles.
