How can I display Section Number

Hi there, I am trying to find a way to display "Section Number" on Section cover pages. I have used my "Insert Special Character > Section Marker" for the Section Name, which is very useful throughout the document (especially marking master pages etc), but I'd like to add a seperate text field, with different formatting, showing "Section 1" and so on, on each section cover page, in addition to the section name. Here's the crux; the document I'm building, will have the sections moved around from one iteration to the next, so it'd be super helpful if I could have the section numbers automatically populate so it changes when sections are re-ordered and new sections are added etc.

Cheers

Hard to know without seeing it but you can do it

Care to share a sample file?

Something like this

EugeneTyson_0-1697007866866.png

Can be setup using Text Variables and Paragraph styles

You can change the text on the individual pages to any text you want

The text variable is on the parent page along with the page number

Sample file attached

You'll need to look into Text Variables, Paragraph Styles, Parent Pages and Automatic Numbering etc.

If this isn't it let us know 🙂

Hi Eugene, thanks so much for your reply. I've uploaded an annotated screenshot to show one of my section cover pages. Everything is marked up in terms of how I've built it out, and I've highlighted the problem. I can't fix the problem by naming the sections "Section 1 Construction Programme" because sometimes the sections move around from one document to the next, so Construction Programme may be section 2 or 3 in another document. So I'm trying to find a way that when I select this section and all it's pages, pull it up or down in the document, that the section number (highlighted as "PROBLEM" in the screenshot) automatically changes (along with this same text box on all the other section cover pages). I've tried a numbered list, but InDesign retains the "order created" in terms of text boxes and doesn't change the numbering that way. Hopefully that all makes sense and thanks again for getting back to me.

Ok seems doable. I'll be back at the computer later today.

If you post a sample file of a few pages maybe another could jump in. If not I'll be home shortly.
