The document I'm working in moves the dollar sign to the right of any number automatically. So $2000  becomes 2000$ and It's infuriating. I'm still new to InDesign but I can't figure it out. Please help

Hi Erubus1

did you inherit the document from someone else?

Can you show a screenshot of the applied paragraph formatting in the Control panel, also another one of the applied character formatting, also from the Control panel when you select the digits and the $ sign?

( Is suspect a formatting feature for RTL documents that is needed for Hebrew or Arabic typesetting. )

Thanks,
Uwe Laubender

It was an Adobe template I downloaded doing the SAME THING. I canceled my personal Adobe subscription because of utter frustration. It's 2 am and I am again trying to retype an entire City government newsletter.

As Uwe has alluded, language, and thus the direction of text and the postioning of punctuation, etc., is a character level attribute, which is why he asked to see the formatting applied in the Control Panel.

I would also suggest that you check which paragraph composer is being used. In the Paragraph Style defintion dialog it will be listed under the Justification pane and you can check for overrides by selecting the text and checking the panel flyout menu of either the Paragraph Panel or the Control Panel in text mode. Since you are using English you will want to be sure the composer is set to either Adobe Paragrapg Composer or Adobe Single Line Composer rather than one of the World Ready composers. I suspect that's where your problem lies, and it oeriginated on the system where the template was created.

Perhaps superfluous, but it is important to keep in mind that templates often bring as many quirks, faults and problems into a workflow as they putatively solve. None are handed down from on high by some perfect Adobe system (or ChatGPT); they are created by individual designers and for every one that is meticulously set up and polished, there are... several... that are as much of a mess under the hood as anything a co-worker on the fifth floor might have whipped up.

And then, even with impeccable setup, many of the originator's system settings and defaults will be bundled along with it, creating utterly baffling element and content behavior such as this.

Templates can be an useful thing. But they aren't "free." To use them is to assume the costs of having odd things go wrong and needing to correct document settings, oftentimes in obscure and unfamiliar places.

This is the famous 'Paragraph composer' 😉 Set it to 'Adobe paragraph composer' or 'single line', but not one of the 'World composer' settings.
