Hyperlink behaviour

Normally a hyperlink (in html) can state a target (for instance this or blank) in which the link should be opened.
Ofcourse if you created an pdf with indesign, you want the hyperlink to be opened in a new tab or window.
Such that your pdf remains open for the reader to continu after visitting the link.
However this is not the case (at least not in Chrome or Firefox).
I can't seem to find how to specify the desired behavior for each link (you would expect this to be fairly easy with such an old standaard).

Best ask this in the Acrobat forum. An Acrobat JavaScript could help, but the user must agree using JavaScript with Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro on Mac OS or Windows 10. It will not work with PDF readers in Chrome and Firefox or other devices like tablets or smart phones.

Who uses Arcobat?
PDF = portable document standard, can be opened by various apps.
Since most work online and pdf support is common in browsers, no one needs Acrobat Reader.

As I have tried to point out to others for quite some time, interactive PDFs anywhere but Acrobat or Reader on a desktop is crapshoot. Adobe can do nothing about browsers or third party reader applications.

is this a browser thing, really?
I think this would be a html thing where Adobe only fills the href and does not support the target attribute.
There lot's of other pdf generators that in fact work as typically desired.

Then I suggest looking closely at what you are exporting....it's called Adobe PDF for a reason.

I already bumped in to very old requests on this.
Surely such a trivial thing would be supported now in this decade?!?

according to this post it would be possible with a little javascript, so why doesn't InDesign make this easy?

I guess the pdf standard or PS standard for that matter, failed to address proper support for this simple use case that nowadays it concidered very normal behavior for viewers?

Take it up with ISO. It's their standard.

"according to this post it would be possible with a little javascript, so why doesn't InDesign make this easy?"

Yes, Acrobat Pro's JavaScript, not inDesign's.

For the enduser that means:

[1] A pop-up window with a message if JavaScript should run in Adobe Reader on Windows 10 or Mac OS.

[2] For every other PDF reader software: No JavaScript, the link will not do what you want.
