All text in InDesign must be in a frame.

 

To add text to InDesign:

  • Select the Type tool from the toolbox (the T),
  • Draw a frame (a box) to hold the text,
  • Click inside the frame and start typing.

 

If you are trying to place text over an image, draw the frame away from the image, add the type, format it, and then use the Selection tool (the first tool in the toolbox) to move the frame over the image.

Additional to Barb’s advice, go to text frame options (context menu, or cmd/ctrl B) and activate Frame ignores text wrap).
