I have a major problem with print-ready PDFs (in Romanian).

New Here ,
Jul 02, 2025 Jul 02, 2025

There are three images attached.
In the first image, I have a screenshot from the InDesign document.

In the second image, there is a PDF of the same document, for proofreading.
In the third image, there is the PDF that was sent to print (which I had no reason to check anymore, since the InDesign document hadn’t undergone any changes). Instead of the hyphenation, an “a” appeared.
After various attempts, I disabled “Optimize for Fast Web View” and “Create tagged PDF.” The error disappeared.

Did you use the Adobe World Ready Composert in connection. with tags? Use the normal Paragraph or Line Composer.  Or turn off the tags upon export for print.

As you can see, I deactivated some tags in pdf settings. But it's not normal.

Hi @Florin Iaru,

Thank you for sharing these clear screenshots and all the context. I understand how concerning it can be to find a character substitution like this, especially at the print stage.

I tested this on my end using InDesign 20.4.1 and wasn't able to reproduce the issue so far. Could you please confirm the exact version of InDesign you are using, for example, 20.4 or 20.4.1? It would also help to know if this happens in all files or just this one. When you get a chance, please try creating a new simple test file using the same font and hyphenation settings, export it with 'Create Tagged PDF' enabled, and see if the issue appears.

Additionally, please let me know your OS version and if you are using any custom font management tools or plugins. If possible, it would be helpful if you could share an affected sample file by packaging it, along with a short screen recording showing your export settings and the resulting PDF, so I can investigate further.

Looking forward to your update!

Abhishek

OK.
First of all, it should be mentioned that I encountered this phenomenon in the Romanian language (which is recognized and applicable in InDesign). I don’t know if it applies to all languages.
I have been using InDesign from version ferom 20.0 up to 20.4.1 since its release.
I can’t say exactly what happened with version 23. But I found a document (PDF) made two years ago in which the error appeared similarly. When opened in InDesign, the document is correct, but in the print PDF, the error appears.
However, at this moment, if I export with or without “Create tagged PDF,” the difference remains. Without the checkbox, it’s OK; with the checkbox, it breaks. I am attaching images from the original document and the print version.
I work on Apple, and I have worked in both Sequoia and Sonoma. MacBook Pro, M1MAX, 32 GB RAM.

Hi @Florin Iaru,

Thank you so much for explaining the issue clearly and for sharing the detailed screenshots. I understand how serious this must feel, especially when it affects print-ready PDFs.

To investigate this further and try to reproduce it on my end, I would need a sample file where you are seeing this behavior. Could you please share one by packaging the document along with all necessary fonts and links? Reference: https://adobe.ly/44sqr7M

If the file is confidential, feel free to share it with me directly via DM here on the community.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Abhishek

Hi @Florin Iaru,

Thanks again for staying in touch and for all the helpful details you've shared so far.

The product team is reviewing the issue and has asked if you could please confirm which locale your InDesign application is installed in. Since Romanian is not an official InDesign locale (though it's used as a document language), knowing the installed locale will help us understand which composer might be active by default.

Looking forward to your confirmation so we can continue investigating this with the team.

Abhishek
