I keep trying to add text to a text box to start my document. But nothing appears but a double circl

I keep trying to add my text to a text box when I first create a new document. But nothing appears other than a double circle.  I used CS5 and this isn't the same. What am I doing wrong?

A screen shot would be very helpful here, along with your OS and the version of InDesign you are using now.

Nothing about entering text has changed...

InDesign CS5 is about 12 years old will have problems with modern operating systems. Probably time to upgrade to CC2021/2022.
