Hi!
I can't find the words to explain what's happened eloquently.
I have a vector graphic I'd like to use as a background. When I place the illustrator file into InDesign, the graphic looses much detail and it doesn't look like the original.
However, when I copy and paste the element into InDesign, the graphic appears fine.
I've checked my display settings. The image looks correct in the preview of the import settings.
Any thoughts to what could be causing this issue?
It looks like the AI file is RGB with transparency effects. Try setting your InDesign Transparency Blend space to RGB with Overprint Preview turned off

The image may have overprint effects (as opposed to multiple effects) to achieve that look. Try turning on View > Overprint Preview in Indesign to see if that is the case. Also, is this an eps graphic? If so, you can try saving from Illustrator .ai or .pdf

Thanks for your suggestions. Viewing Overprint Preview didn't change anything.
The files placed are .ai. The original was an EPS file and it looks correct when placed in InDesign.
This is the saved .ai file in Illustrator. I removed the text from the original eps file.

You have checked your display settings -- are they set to High Quality Display?
Copy-paste from Illustrator to InDesign in not usually a good idea, and especially not for such a complex graphic as this.

I have checked my display settings; and I have no intentions on copy-paste from illustrator on the actual file! I was only testing to see if I got the same results.

Although this suggestion does not resolve any of the issues you are experiencing with the vector files, but you may want to place a rasterized version of this graphic to avoid any potential problems down stream.
