I just got a notice from my prepress department about not nesting frames in indesign. The issue was this particular asset was repeatedly dropping out at export. They couldnt find any otheer issues with the files other than the embedded frames. I'm constantly pasting images into frames. Is this a known issue/bug or does anyone know what could be going on?

Not a known issue, and a valid techniqe for masking, so I suspet you may have some sort of document corruption.
Would be worth exporting to .idml, then open that and save as a new .indd.

Ask the printer if they open your PDF files with another program than Acrobat?
if so, with which program?
Nested frames are never a problem.
How do you make the PDFs?

I don't make the pdf's prepress does and I agree nested frames have never been a problem.

Can't imagine this being an issue.
Can you share the InDesign file and PDF?
Just a sample page would be fine showing the issue.
Thanks

I can't image it either. Drives me crazy when we have 1 issue and everything get upended. Unfortunatly I can't provide a sample page..

Hi @davidn5918184 , When you paste where is the copy coming from an InDesign object or another application? If it is from InDesign making a direct selection (white selection tool) would stop the nested frame creation. If it is from another application, it would probably be better to use Place rather than Paste Into.

The image comes from inDesign. We usually get an image that has multiple images on them. We will draw frames around them, cut the image and paste into each frame. As far as the direct selection tool thats exactly what I'm doing now it's just that it leaves an empty frame I have to deal with. Not the end of the world but I try to streamline as much as possible.
