Indesign 16.4.1 vs 16.4

We are updating our workgroups to inDesign 16.4.1 but I've noticed on some of our Macs, the option to install 16.4.1 isn't available only 16.4. We are on Macs OS Catalina. Can anyone shed some light? I just don't want some designers saving a file and then the next designer not having the 16.4.1 version. We're not ready to take the leap to newer versions. Help and thank you!

Hi @judym43700582,

Are you sure that you are seeing version 16.4.1? I ask this because according to the following link, 16.4.1 is non existent and 16.4 is the latest one for version 16

https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/fixed-issues.html

Anyhow with minor changes in the version there is generally no document format incompatibility, so you should be fine in any case.

If there exists a version 16.4.1 there should not be any problem to open and cooperate with 16.4. The .1 on 3rd position indicates that this version is only a bigfix. In very rare occasions I have seen bugfixes published only for a specific processor or configuration available. If your installer or updater does not show any update, then none exists for your computer.

Is there any reason not to update to 17.2.1, which is the latest update inclusive bugfix available?

Hi Judy,

what you can try if you have no 3rd-party plug-ins installed and all machines are on MacOS:

Just do a backup of the InDesign 16.4.1 application folder and transfer it to the machine where you see the 16.4.0 version's application folder. First do a backup of the 16.4.0 application folder as well and then exchange it with the InDesign 16.4.1 application folder from this other machine.

FWIW: Because this is a minor dot update you should be able to open 16.4.0 documents with 16.4.1 and 16.4.1 version documents with 16.4.0 without any issues.

Btw. 16.4.1 is a security update for "managed environments":
