Hi spwestra,
We are sorry to hear you're experiencing an issue with InDesign. We would request you to try
login into the root account (https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204012). Check how the application works there.
If it works fine there, then it could be related to permission errors. Follow these steps to repair permission errors:
Let us know if that helps. We'll try our best to help.
Note: Submit a crash report by following the steps in this help article. While submitting the crash report, please use the same email address with which you are signed in on this community. This will help us find the crash report and help accordingly
Thanks,
Harshika

Thank you for your response. I did try to log in with the root user, and InDesign seemed to work fine. I used the terminal with the command line given and I got the following:
-bash: user: No such file or directory... I have a screenshot if you would like me to send it

Thanks for sharing the info, spwestra. It looks like there is an issue with your operating system (MacPro), so we would suggest you, please reach out to the apple support team and let them know that InDesign is working on the root account.
Let us know if you need further assistance. We'd be happy to help.
Thanks,
Harshika

Just to follow up. After jumping through many hoops, I was able to actually talk to an Adobe tech who shared my screen to see the problem. They were able to fix the issue. I am not sure I followed the exact sequence of events, but they said they cleared permissions and cache files on a deeper level. It is working fine now and there was no problem with my Mac operating system.
