InDesign 19.4 crashing when clicking on text box

New Here ,
Jun 04, 2024 Jun 04, 2024

I have a Lenova ThinkPad Windows laptop. After updating from 19.3 to 19.4, the program began crashing whenever I clicked on a text box. I tested with different documents with the same results.

I tried a few of the "usual" fixes for crashes (including removing the prefs folder) with no success, so I downgraded to 19.3. Downgrading fixed the problem, so there appears to be a compatiblity problem with my system.

I'd like to troubleshoot this further if anyone has suggestions. I would hate to be stuck at 19.3.

Did you try the "export to IDML; open the IDML; Save As to a new document"?

I know that I've seen several posts recently reporting the same issue. So it appears like a bug in 19.4, even if it's not widespread.

Hi @BlueDave,

Thank you for submitting the bug on the uservoice page. A few more details from your end would be super helpful-

Could you share an InDesign file with me over a private message so we can test it on our end?
Could you please also record a video showcasing the issue?

Have you submitted the crash report?
Do you have any external monitors connected? If yes, please share the details of the monitor.
Is it happening with all documents or with a specific file?
Is the issue happening on a file created in the 19.4 version?

We will try our best to help.

Thanks,

Harshika

Harshika, thank you for your suggestions and requests. I'm uploading a screen recording of the program crashing. I updated to 19.4 before running this and, sure enough, it crashed on that version as it has every time before.

The difference this time was that I am home with a different monitor setup, so we can probably eliminate displays as a cause. Other answers:

I have submitted a few crash reports after these incidents.

I will send you the file that is shown in the screen recording.

I tested earlier with one or two other documents, which were for sure created on earlier ID versions. I'm not 100% sure about the creation version of the document in the screen recording.

But wait...

At this moment as I began testing other documents, none of them crashed. And in fact the document in the screen recording also did not crash. That muddies the waters, doesn't it?

@HARSHIKA_VERMA - I couldn't figure out how to attach a file to a DM to you so I'm just attaching the indd file shown in the screen recording here.

It's a new day and this morning, v19.4 again crashed after I clicked a text box, which is consistent with its recent behavior. Yesterday when it briefly did not crash appears to be the anomoly. So I am downgrading again to 19.3 and hoping for a solution.

Thank you for sharing the video and the file. I have escalated the info to the team for further investigation. The team has also observed some issues with the text box, which they are currently working on.

I will get back to you as soon as I get any updates from the team and if they need any further details to investigate the issue further.

Thanks,

Harshika
