InDesign 2021 slow performance & crashes.

Before updating indesign worked fine, but moving to indesign 2020 has literally made it nearly useless. It's slow to load, it constantly crashes, placing simple files takes a horrible amount of time.

Illustrator 2021 works similarly. I've never had it crash as often as it does now.

What operating system are you using? Is it the most up to date version of the OS? If it is not then try updating it and see if that speeds up your InDesign.

Try turning off Live Preflight to see if that makes a difference. How to speed up InDesign display performance

Which OS and version?
How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?
