InDesign 2023 ver 18.2.1 constantly crashes when I try to:

• Insert new hyperlink
• Navigate to hyperlink window

I tried to reinstall the app, delete preferences, turn off links auto-update, nothing seems to work. Checked with Macbook 2018 and iMac 2020.

Did anyone else have this issue? Maybe I could f*cked up something and it behaves like that. Previosely worked with book that contain many hyperlinks and this is the 1st time I experience this. Quite annoying.

Does this happen on one file, or all files? A completely new file?

If it's just one, or a file that's been under development for a while, try the 'purge' — save/export to IDML, reopen that, save as a new INDD file. That often fixes glitches and corruption in specific docs.

James, thank you for your response. I tried what you suggested (making the IDML file, then an INDD) but it still crashed when I tried to add the hyperlink. I created a new document and was able to add a hyperlink, no problem. So that implies it's the one document that has issues. How do I resolve? Any insight would be appreciated. 🙂

Unfortunately, that's about the limit of my magic tricks in this area. It's possible/likely that one or more of the existing links is corrupt, somehow; you might search for each one and either check it as a local/spot action, or delete and reconstruct it. That will be a hassle if you have very many, or if you have a variety of link types to deal with.

It might help to export to PDF and check each link's functionality there. If one doesn't export, doesn't work or does something weird, it's probably your culprit.

ETA: If you can open the hyperlink window, you can use it for troubleshooting. Not quite clear if the crash is when you open the window or try to add a link. If the latter, the window status of each link will help a lot.

You are so kind to offer all this help, thank you. The first time, it happened as soon as I clicked on the drill down menu to add the link. The second time, I was able to get to the window, change the link to Page, and then POOF, gone. That same scenario happened two more times.

I will try the other suggestions you gave, to try to isolate the issue further. If all that proves it's deeper than that, bye-bye Preferences, will build them anew. Hopefully that does the trick. 😉
