I have just updated to the 2023 InDesign, and now suddently my documents are read-only and I cannot save the file, but have to make a save as version and give the document a new name everytime I have to save my work.
Do you know why this is happening? And how to avoid this?

Hi All,
We would like to express our gratitude for your patience. The team has fixed the issue on the Windows machine in InDesign 18.4, and you should restart the machine once after updating to InDesign 18.4 version.
Please let us know if you're still experiencing the issues on your Windows or Mac machine.
Please also try the workaround suggested below:-
- Disable Preview Pane in Explorer- >View-> Preview Pane.
- Close InDesign, Restart the system.
We will escalate to the team for furthe

@elenitzina Our product team is researching this issue & it seems like the issue is environment specific. We are unable to reproduce the issue in-house yet. They are trying various combinations shared by different users to reproduce the issue. @HARSHIKA_VERMA will contact you via DM to get more details about your environment like network drives, anti-virus etc, so that we can simulate the same issue at our side. We appreciate your patience. We will keep everyone posted on the progress by updating this thread as soon as we will receive new updates from our product team.

Our production team has also had this issue for the last month, ever since InDesign updated to 18. We have been watching this thread hoping to see news of a fix. It's wasted a LOT of time.

I am glad there are others watching this thread closely....
I think a huge thing for Adobe to know is that when any of us open these documents...and it shows "Read Only".... if we close the document immediately....and then Re-open it again immediately.... it is no longer Read Only. Whay is that? That should be a very telling piece of evidencef or the programmers I would think.

I've been having this problem ever since updating to InDesign 2023 (18.1 x64). All my files are on a server, and my computer is running Windows 10. An odd thing is that not all InDesign files show the problem. Another odd thing is that if I reopen a file and choose "Original" in an attempt to get around the "Read Only" close-and-reopen dance, that file has the "Read Only" at the top, so I have to close it and reopen it anyway.
And yes, it's particularly frustrating when working with Share for Review because, as someone pointed out earlier in this thread, if I forget to look up in that bar, close and reopen, and have to rename the file because I don't want to lose my changes, that removes all the previous Share for Review comments.
Hoping and waiting for a fix....

We have been having the same issue with version 18 on Windows, saving and renaming copies is highly disruptive in a deadline-driven environment, especially when using Books...still no progress after four months?

@HARSHIKA_VERMA this clearly needs to be escalated, still no solution!

For me the only solution was to completely deativate the Avivra Anti Virus software. Which does not feel good, but it was the only way to get readable and writeable files from the server.

We aren't using any anti-virus except what comes with Microsoft Windows, so that's not the issue.
(Also, since we are using InCopy / InDesign, we can't rename files)

I am absolutely having this problem, too. I just switched my work computer from a Macbook Pro to a Windows 11 Dell. This is suddenly an issue, having to "save as" multiple version numbers just to get my work done. Please let us know when this will be fixed.

I also have these additional files showing with a weird icon that I've never seen.

Same read only issue as everyone else. We produce an 800 page 17 section catalog every year and this year was a nightmare. 17 Indesign files that would randomly open as read only. Please tell me that a fix is on the horizon

We are beyond ready for this to be fixed. Now matter how hard we try....many times we begin working for the day, and don't notice the [read only] tag on the file name at the top....so after hours of work...we have to do a "Save As" creating a new file in the folder....we end up with tons of InDesign files for the same job and have to then delete or archive the older ones. It has been such a time-suck for our team, not to mention a dangerous way to work.

Same here, we've been living with this bug for 2 months now and from Adobe there is only silence.

Honestly, we've been patient. There's no reason this shouldn't be at the forefront of the adobe team, and there's no reason we shouldn't have a fix by now. We've given you all the information you have, and seeing how active this thread is I don't see how your team is having an issue recreating the glitch.
PLEASE give us an update or at least some kind of forecast as to when it will be fixed. I know you all are buddy-buddy with Apple, but your windows users are suffering with nowhere else to go seeing as your company is essentially a monopoly in the design industry.
@HARSHIKA_VERMA & @Vivek12 Fix it. Please.

Forgot to mention that this only happens on our machines (Windoes 10) using the EasyCatalog Lite plug-in. Of course, the folks at EasyCatalog said that this is an Adobe issue and direct us to this thread.

Does Adobe have an answer/fix on this for the PC users yet? I have been dealing with this ridiculous issue since October! Costing me so much time and there have been so many errors becaues of this.

And still no fix with the latest update. Come ON ya'll. You're absolutely killing us.

I am also having the same problem. My file that was created a year ago (in InDesign 2022), opens as Read Only and I can't save it as it keeps telling me it's corrupt. Fair enough, so I created a brand new file (now InDesign 2023), but it keeps asking to Save As as it is open by other applications. But it isn't. I only have it open in InDesign. So I created it as an IDML file which then I repeatedly have to save as as an IDML file. Come on Adobe, we pay a lot of money for these applications and many businesses rely on them. It shouldn't be this hard to "save a file".

After month of struggling with this serious problem I can’t believe there is still no word of a fix. PC customers are being left high and dry. This obviously needs to be escalated. Does anyone know the official channels to make a complaint to Adobe?
