Ever since the upgrade to InDesign 2025, after I open an InDesign file, close it and exit, and then need to rename the file or the folder it is in, or try to move the folder to a different location, I get the dialogue box: "The action can't be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again". The folder and file remain in this state until the computer is rebooted. This does not happen with Illustrator 2025, or with Photoshop 2025 files and folders. This did not happen in InDesign 2024.
I can copy these files into new folders and rename the copies, as long as they are not opened in InDesign 2025. It is pretty clear to me that InDesign [probably it's "Open Recent" file list] is locking these folders & files in place with something like a hidden database file, or similar.
This is very difficult since most of my work is "Work in Progress" and until I get part numbers and drafting numbers need for my files and folders to be renamed, I do as much layout work as possible until then.
This is InDesign 2025 on Windows 10 Enterprise 22H2, i7-12850HX, 32GB RAM

Thank you for sharing your experience with InDesign 2025. It sounds frustrating to deal with file and folder restrictions after closing your documents.
Could you please check the Task Manager to see if any InDesign documents are still open in any application after you've closed them? If you find any instances still running, please end the task for those documents and then test if the issue persists.
Additionally, it would be helpful if you could share a screen recording demonstrating the issue. This will allow us to better understand what you're encountering.
Lastly, can you confirm if this problem occurs with a particular file or with all InDesign files? This information will help us troubleshoot more effectively.
Thank you for your patience, and I look forward to your response!
Best,
Abhishek Rao

Thank you for checking the Task Manager and for your prompt reply.
Since you mentioned that InDesign isn’t showing as still running, I recommend trying to record your screen to demonstrate the issue. You can follow the instructions in this link: [How to Record Your Screen in Windows 11](https://adobe.ly/3YJAEtR;
This will help us better understand the behavior you're experiencing with the file and folder restrictions.
Thank you for your cooperation, and I look forward to your findings!

Hi @Anick5C60,
Thank you for sharing your experience. It sounds like you're encountering challenges with exporting your files, and I understand how frustrating that can be, especially when working on a larger project like a book with multiple chapters.
It's worth noting that if you're saving your files in a OneDrive folder, the syncing process could be causing some issues. InDesign may have difficulty accessing the files if OneDrive is actively syncing them, which could lead to the errors you're experiencing.
InDesign is designed to work across various networks, removable media, and cloud-synced folders (like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive) and is tested across multiple configurations. However, not all configurations, including different software, hardware, settings, and access rights, have been thoroughly tested, which means your setup might lead to errors or unexpected behavior.
To avoid such problems, we recommend working on your files from a local directory, like the Desktop. You can manually copy them to the removable media, network drive, or cloud-synced folder afterward, or consider using Cloud Documents for better compatibility. Please let me know if you have more questions or need further assistance. I'm here to help!
Best,
Abhishek Rao

I am on Windows 10, not 11. This is not a feature of Win 10 [Snip & Scetch on 10]. For now, I will uninstall InDesign 20255 and go back to 2024.... Thank you for your help.

Hi, same issue here with latest version of InDesign, on Windows 11. No InDesign process running (but plenty related to CreativeCloud...) Nothing to record, it just won't allow you to rename a file as if the file was still in use. Something's wrong and new (although Adobe programs have always been a pain wrt files remaining in use, just never to this point where the program is closed and i am still stuck!)

I have found that if I do the CNTRL+ALT+DEL, and sign out, then sign back in, without rebooting, whatever is "sticking" the file like it is still in use, goes away...

Hi @Jellob99,
Thanks for reaching out, and I understand how frustrating this issue must be. I just tested it on my end with InDesign 2025 (v. 20.0) by creating and saving a file, and while the document was open, I couldn’t rename it either. However, once I closed InDesign, I was able to rename and move the file without any issues.
Could you try closing all applications that might be accessing the file (including any background Creative Cloud processes) and then attempt renaming or moving it? Sometimes, other programs linked to the file can inadvertently keep it in use.
Let me know if this works for you or if you need more assistance!
Best,
Abhishek Rao

FYI, I opened the .indd and packaged it somewhere else. I then closed the file and was able to rename this new folder. The previous one is still stuck after all this time. I'll try the workaround from @Joseph307250199w1k .Tks !

Hi @Jellob99!
Thanks for the update. It sounds like you're on the right track with the workaround. If you continue to have issues with the original file, you might want to check for any background processes or apps that could still be accessing it. Sometimes a simple restart can also help release any file locks. If you need further assistance, feel free to reach out. Good luck!
Best,
Abhishek Rao

I have a workaround: close and reopen InDesign and the folder can be deleted.

Hi, sorry for my bad English...
Same problem: after finishing a job I exit InDesign (2025, but the problem also occurred in version 2024) and I can't move the folder where the file I just created/modified is located...
I noticed that if I delete the "Adobe Crash Processor.exe" process the problem disappears and I can make the moves or deletions I need, so it seems to be the culprit.
The "Adobe Crash Processor.exe" process is then restarted the next time I use InDesign...

Hello, here is the requested file: https://we.tl/t-9ZVpuyILd5
OT: I find it very strange and absurd that .zip files cannot be uploaded but potentially dangerous files such as .pdf, .docx, .xls, .xlsx are allowed.
