InDesign Book Panel and Workspace Issues After Recent Updates on Windows

Explorer ,
Jan 02, 2026 Jan 02, 2026

Hi Abhishek, thanks for asking for a screenshot of all the problems we found only from December.
The following one is related to my previous post: "If I open an INDD document, I find the palettes in the positions where I stored them in my Workspace. However, if I open a Book, more than half of the palettes are missing! Even when I try to reload the positions stored in my Workspace."
In the screenshot, I put the two situations: The full palette stored in my workspace, and one of the random situations when some (almost all) of the palettes disappear.

When I open a Book composed of multiple documents, it sometimes puts an exclamation point on some documents I've modified inside the Book, NOT outside. If I hover over the exclamation point, it says "Document modified outside the book," even though I haven't opened the documents outside the book.

@Tom ato You should start a separate discussion for this. It is unrelated to the history problem.

Hi Dave, if all these issues, like the ones mentioned by Outdesing above, all occurred in December and never occurred before, why do you think there's no correlation?
On our end, we're wasting a lot of time and some work.
This doesn't seem like a real dialogue to me. We're hitting a wall...

Regardless, this post was about the history problem, not every problem with the new update. It's likely that the problems are from completely different parts of the code, so while related to the same upgrade, they are most likely separate issues. A separate thread would be more apropos.

As an aside, I still think it has something to do with the hardware setup, other installed software, or problems with the install, or corrupt support files. Luckily, I'm not experiencing any of these issues.

If I receive new versions of some images for a job, I have to relink them one by one, even if they have exactly the same names as before. Previously, when I relinked one, it automatically updated all the others. Working with these errors becomes incredibly slow.

Are you referring to the Relink to Folder function?

Hi @Tom ato,

Thanks for the details. I tested this on my end with InDesign 21.1 on Windows 11, but I wasn't able to reproduce the behavior.

Could you please confirm whether the Book file, chapter documents, and linked assets are stored locally on your drive and not on a remote or cloud location? If they are on a remote or cloud location, please try saving everything locally and then test again. Also, please let me know if this happens with a specific file or with all Book files.

As a starting point, please try manually resetting InDesign preferences and then test again using the steps here: https://adobe.ly/49D0p5u

Additionally, try creating a brand-new Book file, add the same local chapter documents into it, save it, and reopen the Book to see if that helps.

For the relinking behavior, please try packaging one chapter file, replacing the images inside the packaged folder with updated files that have the same names, then reopen the file and test relinking.

If the issue still occurs, a short screen recording showing the Book open, the warning icon, the missing panels, and the relink behavior would help me escalate this with the product team.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek
