I am running indesign on a windows 11 PC. I have the latest version but now the entire program crashes when I open an existing file. Any ideas? If anyone from Adobe is reading this it needs fixing becaus I have paid a lot of money for the software.

If you are getting repeating crashes there are several possibilities. Do you get any error message? Are you launching InDesign by double clicking an existing file, or are you launching first, then trying to open a file? If the latter, does InDesign actual complete the startup process and if not, waht is the last message you see?

It is any file opened either directly (double click) or via indesign (file open). It would appear to be files last saved with an older version in indesign cc. The file will open but any interaction (ie; select text to copy, or try and type new text in ect) results in a popup box which says "indesign has encountered a problem and needs to close". I have clicked on the report this and now also get a box saying there is a fix or workaround "click here" but that is unresponsive. As a workaround I have discovered that I can save the file as an IDML which at least means I can open it and copy the text out but re-saving as an INDD file results in the same fault. Newly created files have no issues but my problem is that I run a commercial business that frequently has to amend files from years back so this is a major issue for me.

Either corrupted file or InDesign's preferences.
First, Try to reset preferences:
Then maybe your document will open - try the mentioned IDMLing way.
If you still can't open your document - there is a simple script that opens INDD file as hidden - @jmlevy posted it recently.

If restting prefs doesn't solve this, it would be worth running the cleaner tool (Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool to solve installation problems ) and doing a clean install. Do not imoprt prefs from previous version or install.
