InDesign Crashing while opening files

I am having a lot of trouble with my InDesign and Illustrator crashing upon opening, specifically when the missing fonts prompt appears on the screen. The system is operating really slowly, and keeps crashing when I open documents. If anyone has any suggestions for me that would help me out a lot.

Sorry about the crashing! I know that's really frustrating. Which OS and version of InDesign is this? Does it seem to crash at random or after a particular action? I would like to know if the steps suggested above worked for you?
