We have 3 graphic designers using InDesign on Mac. Sometimes when saving an InDesign file, several links go missing and have to be readded.
All the files are stored on a Windows Server, and aren't being touched other than with InDesign. There is also no correlation with the missing links; it can be all the links in the file one time you open it, or only a few missing the next time.. This is not permissions based either, as every account has full access to the Server.
Heh, IMO, key word here is *sometimes*.
You're not the first and not alone at all.
When InDesign doesn't like some particular path or character, it doesn't like it in 24/7 regime.
Can you re-create the problem to show it to someone? No? That means ID is just unstable dealing with network, period.
You may to drive mad your admins with this and still find yourself at the same point where you are now.
Take it or leave it, the only known universal reliable solution so far is keeping your links locally.

Any illegal characters in the file names? Accented characters?

No, the filenames are of varying lengths, most are short and look like this: "img2271.png"

Yes, this may break your workflow, so convenient in all other aspects.
Consider your local (or server) copy as a backup, maybe this will help you to feel safer and better...

I'm a volunteer editor. I have no admin. I don't know what keeping your links locally means.
