I used to be able to import an illustrator file (as an .ai file)  into indesign and use fitting options like "center image". With the latest updates however indesing recognizes the illustrator background as part of the image, making the fitting options useless. How do I fix this. Thanks!

When you import, select Show Import Options, then in "Crop to" select either "Bounding Box" or "Art"

You may have inadvertantly selected something else at some point in the past and the previous setting tends to stick.
