Interactive inDesign document - Potentially a layering issue

Hi everyone,

I'm new to creating Interactive InDesign documents and need some help with a problem I'm facing.

I have an expandable popup box in the lower right corner of my page (bright blue in the screenshot). This box has two clickable buttons that open new content, and they work as expected. However, I also have a menu on the left side of the page that opens different text boxes.

One of these text boxes covers the buttons in the expandable popup box on the lower right. When I click the buttons, a thin dotted outline of the text box appears (see screenshot). Other text boxes activated by the menu do not interfere with the expandable box and buttons.

The expandable box in the lower right is on the top layer, above the text frame that is blocking the buttons. Is there a way to fix this without splitting the offending text box into two columns or programming more interactive elements?

I've tried:

  • Adding pen points to the text box to go around the buttons in the bottom right
  • Moving the text box layer below the layer with the buttons

Any advice would be appreciated!

*Note: you cannot see the menu on the left in the screenshot

The format is Indesign, as an interactive document - exported as a PDF.

Then you can stop now. You'll never get all of this to work acceptably as a PDF.

If this is an EPUB or a Publish Online then yes, it's likely to be some kind of problem with the stacking order. Without seeing the file it's impossible to help but generally, I would avoid show/hide buttons and fields and use multi state objects instead.

If it's a PDF, none of this is advisable.
