Given a large amount of InDesign files is there a known process or script that could report on all fonts and their formats, used within?

Yes, it's possible with my Batch processor script. I did a similar script to get info about the links.
It's easy to write an analogous script that collects fonts info into, say, a csv/txt tab/semicolon delimited file which you can import into Excel / Access.
If you are interested and can wait, I can write it for you. (At the moment, I'm at work.)
