Issues with version / converting

Community Beginner ,

Recently I have been having an issue with conflicting ID build versions with artwork that I have created using inDesign.

I've been creating documents in inDesign, saving them, and then going back to them to work on them again I get an error message along the lines of  'This document was created in a newer version of indesign > Convert'. This forces me into creating a new document. I only have inDesign installed on one machine and all work is done on that machine, by me. I can't fathom why ID seems to think the build version doesn't match and that something I was working on a few days ago was created in a newer version? Is anyone else experiencing this?

I've got a possibility for you: you may have two versions of InDesign installed, without even knowing it.

You don't mention whether you're on a Windows or a Mac platform. Knowing that would help, since narrowing down the platform would let me describe a step-by-step solution to see where the problem may lie.

Thanks for your reply Randy. I'm using Windows 7.

OK.

Go to your Control Panel, change the view to either small or large icon view, then select Programs and Features. This lists all the programs installed on your Windows 7 system. See if you have more than one instance of InDesign installed.

This is entirely possible, as Adobe Crative Cloud allows you to install upgrades while leaving the previous version(s) still installed. It also can use remnants of older versions of InDesign (preferences, add-ons, caches for third-party utilities like font managers, etc.) installed which may make InDesign think it's an older version of the program. But checking the Control Panel>Programs and Features will give more insight of what we're dealing with.

But first let me prepare you for this: you may need to install an updated version of InDesign to get past the problem.

Hope this helps,

Randy

Aha, yes - I do have two versions installed - 2019 and 2015 but the 2015 appears in my quick launch menu, not sure I've ever knowingly opened the program any other way so not sure how I've used 2019, but I obviously have!

Maybe you double click to open INDD files sometimes? If you do, you can give up all hope of knowing which version will open it.

That's entirely not true. All you have to do is right-click on the file, go to the Properties command as I outlined below and you can know EXACTLY which version opens it.

That's not unusual. To confess, I don't know this stuff because I'm Rhodes Scholar-bright; I know it because I've screwed up that way before.

But the good news is if you want to keep both versions of InDesign is that all you need to do is set up shortcuts for InDesign CC 2019 in your quick launch, and I would also recommend you do the same for the taskbar and (if you use it from there) the desktop as well. Also, find one of your existing InDesign .indd document files (and if you use then, .indt template, .indb book, and .indl library files), right-click on it and in the Properties flyaway menu command associate them with InDesign CC 2019.

The faster solution is to just uninstall InDesign CC 2015. And when you double-click on any of those InDesign-associated files, and if needed, tell your Windows 7 system to associate them with the latest version of the program.

Glad things are working out for you,

Randy
