Keyboard shortcuts in InDesign stop working intermittently

Frequently, when I open an InDesign document my keyboard shortcuts won't work. I can execute the commands the the File menu, etc. but not by shortcut. If I close the document, not the program but just the document, and re-open they work fine. Sounds like a bug to me.

A couple of thoughts...

1. Perhaps try resetting the Preferences.
2. Do you have any other software running that might be highjacking the shortcuts?

Sorry to hear about this trouble. I would like to know if the steps suggested above by @Michael Bullo worked for you? If not, I would request you to share a few more details along with the ones asked by Michael:

  • OS and the exact version of InDesign
  • Is the issue happening while working on a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where are you saving the files (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, plugins, or web extensions installed recently.

 

Also, If the function returns after reopening the document, then it can be a specific file issue. Otherwise, it generally happens when a system application (spotlight) or a third-party application has similar shortcuts conflicting with your InDesign application. You may open Activity Monitor and close the applications one by one to check which application is causing this. I hope this helps to resolve your issue.
