I am using InDesign 2023. When I type text into some text frames, the line spacing is HUGE. An example: in an 8 x 10-inch text frame using Arial 32pt, the space between the first and second lines of text is 5 inches. I cannot figure out why this is happening. As far as I can tell the text and frame settings are no different to frames in which the line spacing is "normal", but clearly this is not the case. Could someone explain what's going on and what to do about it, please?
I would hope you are using Styles, in which case, what are the specifications you have set?
Also, check the alignment settings on your text box; e.g. to you have vertical justification on?
Hard to diagnose without seeing a file sample.

Possibilities include vertical justification as per Brad @ Roaring Mouse, but also leading, space before and after and an unusually large baseline grid. Without a screen shot, all we can do is guess. Please post a screen shot with text symbols visible that includes your cursor in the text and the Control Panel visible at the top.

I have been tinkering around with some of your suggestions and the culprit appears to be the vertical justifcation. I had the alignment set to justified so I changed it to top and the problem went away. Sometimes all a person needs is a gentle shove in the right direction. Thank you both very much for your time and expertise!
