I would like to link a data file to a styled text box in InDesign. When the source file is changed, I imagine InDesign will prompt with a "modified link" in the same way it does for linked image files. Can this be done?

With Excel to a table--yes. I've attached a Word file with my process.

Into a more complex InDesign layout--or from a CSV or database--will need a third-party plugin.

Some plugins include EmSoftware's InData and InCatalog, Teacup Software's DataLinker, 65bit's EasyCatalog. There are others.
