HELP: I've been using InDesign for almost 20 years. In the last few updates EVERY time I open an InD file it shows the links need to be updated. We are using a Google shared drive because there are 2 of us working on the same book files. But I've been using this drive for about 2 years and this problem just started recently. If I updated/save/close, it works fine. But if my co-worked opens that file she has to update the links ... and then it doesn't work for me! Anyone else have this problem? If there a fix?

Thanks James. I can't believe it! Right after I posted this I decided to look again at my InDesign Preferences. I'm pretty sure I solved it. My co-worker and I tried a couple of files. I don't know if this is something that has changed but I an posting a png of the option that I think has fixed it. It seems we will have to do the "relink" thing with every file ... but just once - and it SEEMs that the "other"user has to open, relink, save, and let it sync. Don't forget you have to restart InD for the updated preferences to take effect.

AND... NO - it isn't solved. It seemed fixed for like a day. Then goes back to the problem, except now it's worse. Neither of us can keep the art linked. Doesn't matter if I update links, save, close and reopen, I have to update again. Any ideas as to what is going on?

This has nothing to do with InDesign.
For some other services - there was a thread recently - you need to turn off "saving local space" or something like that - so all files are PERMANENTLY stored on your local drive - not "downloaded when requested".

Found it - it's about DropBox:

Here is something about Google Drive:
Looks like there are two modes - Stream and Mirror - you should configure your Google Drive into MIRROR mode.

I get it. You are saying there is an option in Google Drive to store files on local drive. I'm headed to research it. I thought I had this turned on but what you are saying makes sense. Google Drive has been a very different critter to learn than was DropBox. We have a shared drive and because of that we cannot "backup" the shared drive. This is why I thought I had them also stored on my local hard drive.

Hi @Faith-Action:
This happened recently in class with one of my students—the others were fine—so no you are not alone. What OS and InDesign version are you using?
~Barb
EDIT: Robert–FWIW, my student had her files stored on her desktop for class.

@Barb Binder, I don't use any of them - it's just what I remember been discussed here.

Thank you for trying to help
IOS 14.2.1
InDesign 19.0.1
I checked and my links do have the green circle with the check mark in the center, meaning I am mirroring.

And you have Sonoma ... even more bad news for you ... InDesign isn't fully supported on Sonoma ...

WOW - Sonoma was released in Sept 2023. Any word of Adobe catching. up with that? I mean .... LOTS of desktop publishers use a MAC.

I don't remember exactly when my problems started but that could be the answer to this [Sonoma]

At least on Macs you have GPU support - completely removed on a PC...
Not sure if it would make any difference...

Sonoma is still buggy. Until Apple fixes it, stick with Ventura if you can.

Hi @Faith-Action:
The student in the class was also Sonoma and InDesign 19. Others were on Ventura and either InDesign 18 or 19. It was very odd, but I haven't seen anyone else here reporting it so thought it was a one-off.
You can keep an eye on the InDesign system requirements here: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/system-requirements.html. InDesign is still not supported on Sonoma but no idea why.
