Location on disk of a placed image?

Explorer ,
Mar 28, 2025 Mar 28, 2025

Hello. I'm getting back to work after over a year on a large book with many images, and several images will need to be edited. Is there a quick way to locate the image on disk that is linked in InDesign? I don't see anything like "image properties" or "linked image" when right clicking on the image in the project. I see relink image, but it doesn't take me to the location or the currently linked image.

Ah yes. So I see that if you right click on the link in the links panel there's an option "Reveal in Explorer" which takes me directly to the file on disk. Thank you both!

Edit: I do see "Edit Original", but I would have to still have to find the location of that original to either edit it or replace it. So is there a quicker way? Thanks!

Click on 'Relink' and it will open the linked file's location. (Usually; if you are working on multiple projects it sometimes goes to the last link or relink location instead.)

And, under Win11 at least, hovering over the link in the Links panel shows the full file path.

I don't argue that there could be a better/more obvious/more integral way to open the file location from within ID.

In the Links panel there should be an image properties pane below the list of links that will populate when you select a link in the panel, and it should show the path.

That said, if the link is not missing, Edit Original will open the image from it's location with no further input from you.

This is true, but the info panel is ENORMOUS and I've always kept it rather short/small, even on a massive display. It's a bit like that column-span control that resurfaced recently: there, but only if you use enough visual real estate to show it.

It's best to have Links panel hidden when not needed - it slows down InDesign.

I didn't know that; I guess I don't work with enough link-loaded docs.

Unfortunately, anything that would involve refreshing - slows down InDesign - especially Links and Pages.

And that's why it's best to turn off refresh in scripting preferences - gives about 25% boost performance.

I can get the same effect in my IDT by minimizing InDesign.
