Looking for InDesign 1.0 User Guide

New Here ,
Feb 05, 2024 Feb 05, 2024

Hello, I am looking for a PDF of the 1999 InDesign 1.0 User Guide. I'm writing about the history of the software and I need to cross reference which features were in that version. Some people are selling print copies on eBay etc, but I'm presuming that it was available to download at some point, and that someone in the community might have it in their archives. Any help appreciated 🙂

Well, packrat that I am I seem to have an ISO file of the installer disk. There are about 20 mb of PDFs  (37 of 'em) which taken togerther mignt be what you need, but nothing called a user guide. There is a turorial, of sorts, though.

Shoot me a private message with an email address and I'll send you a download link to the .iso.

Hang on -- I've got version 1.5 as well, and THAT ONE has an InDesign 1.0 User Guide.PDF file. I'll send both .iso files.

I still have my hardcopy. No idea where you'd find a PDF of it. There's this:

InDesign New Features Guide .indd (adobe.com)

I agree with Bob. I helped James Wamser begin to compile that guide a very long time ago (2014) and since then I have seen nothing more complete than that. It's possible that somewhere in some Adobe internal archives that show more than that or someone who still has a version of InDesign 1.0 that can run an an ancient computer, but I have never heard of these possibilities.

PS: I live in San Francisco in an apartment, and I don't have the space to accumulate old hardware and software from 25 years ago!

I did a major purge when we moved nine years ago. But I held onto the hard copy of the InDesign 1.0 manual and installation CD. I'd have to dig through some boxes to find it.

Hmmmm. I wonder if there's a PDF of the manual on the disk.

Probably doubtful. I don't recall PDF being used as widely in 1999. Acrobat launched in 1993.

I started sending PDF to press in the late '90s with the introduction of Acrobat 4 but as I think about it, the biggest obstacle I'm going to face (beyond find the disk) is that I have no disk drive in any of my computers.

It's a curse. At least hard drive space is small and cheap.

It's the same guide, I think. I doubt they did a new one for 1.5.

I'm sure, but they didn't include a single PDF guide on the first release CS, but did on the second.
