I have an envelope that I am trying to make a few varities of the same basic design. I saved a copy of the original and renamed it so I could open it up as a new document, but now I can't make any changes. I'm very new to this program, so I don't know what to do. I have images I want to move around and resize but everything looks locked into place and I can't find something that tells me to unlink items or the equivalent.

First, did you save the copy to INDD format and not, say, PDF?

Note that many elements intended to appear on all or many pages will be found on the Parent pages, and not selectable or editable on the doc pages.

In Normal view, any frame with a small lock icon on the upper left is, well, locked. You have to unlock these to modify them.

Objects can also be on different layers, and layers can be locked as well.

Any of that helpful? 🙂
