Missing Numbers Before and After Certain Pages

Explorer ,
Oct 12, 2024 Oct 12, 2024

Why can't I get page numbers on my InDesign File? It comes up so weird. It will give me page numbers from 13-71 but not before or after. I added some 60+ pages at the beginning of the document and then moved pages from another Indesign File into those 60+ pages. Could that be the problem? I tried deleting the master/parent pages and making new master/parent pages, but still can't get the page numbers to show up. Can anyone help?

I did it!  I upgraded my software.  Next, I had to select the Numbering Options and click OK.  Then I had to select "Apply to parent pages" and select the A master page.  I had to do this spread by spread.  I'm so relieved.  Now for the table of contents.  I know this format is all screwed up, but at least I got my pages numbers added.  Thank you everyone for all your help.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Check the Numbering & Section Options of your first page, you may have a section that starts at page 13:

I've learned that if I move pages from one file to another in InDesign, the
moved pages do not include the page numbers designated on the master page
in the new file. Maybe an update of my software would solve the problem?
Also, is there a way to move the character style along with the material
I'm moving?

Are the numbers missing entirely, or are they incorrect?

Some screen shots of the pages panel would be helpful.

Thank you for getting back to me. Moved pages are missing numbers.
Copy/paste pages don't disrupt the numbering. So... if I'm stuck with
this... is there any way I can copy/paste more than one individual text
file at a time? They are individually placed poems...

To be more exact... I have "inserted pages after page (X) in the newer
document. And in the pages window, I get to this by clicking on "Move
Pages."

Thank you again for answering my post. I could scream in frustration.
Everytime I hit "preview" the pages pallet disappears! Is there another
way to take a screenshot that I don't know about?

But, interesting, I noticed the "V" which stands for "custom" is at the
beginning of my pages pallet. What does that mean?

You don't need Preview to take screenshots (if that's what you mean).

Press Cmd-Shift-4, then select the desired area. The screenshot will be on your desktop.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Yes, that's what I meant about opening
"Preview."
I hope you can help me. All I need is the page numbers on my poetry
collection...
So, Is the Custom V notation at the top of the page icons a clue as to my
problem?

Is there a way to move an Indesign page from one InDesign file to another
Indesign file (Insert Pages after page X) without moving anything else but
what's written on that page?

Ok now that you know how to take screenshots, can you please take a screenshot of your Pages panel and post it here.

FYI:  I've been posting to the wrong reply on this forum... I did send you the screen shot before.  My low IQ is revealing itself.  (Or maybe it's my advanced age.)

it's easy to misunderstand this forum options, especially for novice users. regardless, your screenshots didn't seem to arrive to this or any other thread. i see that you were able to successfully attach screenshots to your message earlier. could you try again, or let us know if you experience any issues.

Hi Margo:

How about starting with Window > Pages to display the Pages panel? Nothing in the InDesign interface is superfluous—so look above the page icons for tiny gray triangles—they indicate each time a page number has been set manually.

Double click the very first one and make it look like my screen shot below. Then double click each additional triangle and disable the Start Section checkmark at the very top of the dialog box. This sets the first page at 1 and then they will increment normally as you remove the section starts.

Thank you, Barb.  I tried that...  Maybe I did something wrong.  I'll try again.   In several of the "Numbering and Section Options" dialogue boxes, the "Start Section" choice was grayed out and I couldn't change it.
