need help to add numbers to my Indesign project. i will be puttting these numbers on my output file in the corner of each sheet.

example i have 5000 merge records that i will be mergeing. I want to have batches every 420 records.

1-420 get number 1

421-841 get number 2

842-1262 get number 3

ETC.......

So 5000 records should get about 1-12 numbers.

can anybody help. is this possible thru Indesign? or do i have go thru excel and insert my own numbers.

Split it into batches of files instead.

On batch 1 put 1 in the corner

Batch 2 put 2 in the corner

It's only 12 files or so and just data merge the range you want for that batch.

Or use Section Marker and start a new Section every 421 pages.

Well sometimes I have 50,000 records so doing it manually would take me forever.

Starting a new Section every N-pages can be scripted.

...

Or, as you are doing DataMerge anyway - you can add extra field - that can populate with the extra info, in Excel or any other spreadsheet software - or using your original source.

Have another field in the Data Merge for the
first 500 records - 1

next 500 records - 2

and insert a placeholder in the indesign file
