Odd behaviour > changes which have been made are not shown

We have encontered the folowing behaviour and it hass already happened different times:

We make changes in an existing InDesign document on different pages. Sometimes it now happens that the changes which had been made before (still in the same session before saving the file again) are not shown.

For example we made some text corrections on one page. After having made some other corrections on a different page, the first corretions are not visible any more. Now we see the version prior to the changes. If we now do the corrections again, it sometimes happens that the corrections (for example an added text) are suddenly seen twice. Or it can happen that we save a file where the corrections are not seen, After closing and opening the file again all of a sudden the changes are there.

This happens on two diffrent Mac Pros:

– MacPro End 2013 running MacOS 12.7.2

– MacStudio 2023 running Mac OS 12.7.1

InDesign Version is in both cases 19.1

The files are stored on a shared volume on a Synology NAS. We never had problems like this before with the prior version of InDesign (18.x). We are still trying to figure if this also happens when working on a local machine.

My guess is that InDesign has some kind of Caching problems. But that's just a guess…

Any help would be appreciated.

And I would also like to know if here are other people who have similar problems.

Thanks!

Yes, you should check with file(s) saved locally.

How old / big is your INDD file? How often are you doing "Save As" with a new name - or only Save?

And yes, ID 2024 / v19.x started to be upredictable when working over the network.

Actually the size of the file didn't matter. We had this with large files with 70 pages and more, with lots of linked images as well as with small files with few pages and only vector data and text in them.

Normally we only have new files (InDesign v 19,x) which either have been created in InDesign 19.x or in some cases files saved in InDesign 18.x and then opened and converted in InDesign 19. Normally we save the fíles using "save as" as we do our versioning by saving the files with the date of the day it is saved.

No. It's turned off on both machines.

Now we have been able to recrod this behaviour which has ocurred again. In the attached video we have a text which has been corrected. The old text is "Spielkaulenweg" and the new one is "Tippweg". It had already been corrected. But in "normal" mode (not preview) it wasn't shown. When switching between normal and preview mode you can see that the view changes from the old text to the corrected text and vice versa.

This also happened when just inserting a random character into the text. In the attached video we have just put a blank space. And suddenly you can see the corrected text.

My best guess is that this must be some kind of a caching problem. Somehow InDesign seems to have an old view in the cache and showing it.

When saving and reopening the file the corrected text is shown. Meaning that InDesign needs to build a new cache.

As said before this is just a guess. For us this is a serious bug as we must assure that all corrections coming from our customers are made.
