partial cross reference reverting to full

Community Beginner ,
Aug 29, 2023 Aug 29, 2023

Hello.

I have Figures set up using numbered lists in the format "'Figure x.' ..." I want to add partial cross references in the text that only say (Figure X). When I set up a partial cross using the preformated code in the add building block feature it looks like this

<fullPara delim="." includeDelim="false"/>

I saved this as a new cross reference format called "partial with period". However, it populates with my full figure title, and when I click on the cross reference to edit it, it then shows only

<fullPara delim="." />

Any thoughts? I'm using latest CC 18.5 on a mac.

OK so you want to edit Paragraph Number to include your sentence in front of the building block and probably a period at the end. I added the red color so it would stand out to you but that's just to show you what I'm doing. You can also add a custom name at the top (I forgot) and you can use this x-ref definition for both the table and the figure numbers.

Hi DW:

Are you using auto-numbers to number your figure captions? (So that if you add or remove a figure, all the numbers update?) If you do, you can just use the paragraph number in the cross reference.

Hi Barb,
Yes. I have the numbering set up as a numbered list style so that the
"Figure #." is automatic. I am hoping to insert, for example, "This is my
sentence about my figure (Figure #)." Where 'Figure #' is automatically
updated link-wise and number-wise if things get moved. Would the paragraph
number do that? Can you explain?

Thanks.

Not sure if I'm following (yet). Is this what you are asking for? If it's a yes, I'll explain and if it's a no, please continue to clarify.

Yes. If that is set up so that if you swap figure 1 and 2 both the figure number with the title and within the text reference update numbers. Is that possible? Although I'm not even sure this is going to work for me. I have both a figure title style and a table tile number but they don't seem to be numbering separately from each other. So maybe this system that I have just won't work. For example, I have Figure 20, figure 21, and figure 22, and then the next table is Table 23 instead of Table 4 because it is the fourth table. I thought if they had different styles it would work. Thx.

Ok, that is a completely different question. You need two numbered series? One for tables and one for figures?

ie. table 1, table 2, table 3 and figure 1, figure 2, figure 3?

Just set up two named lists: one named figure for the figure number paragraph style and one named tables for the table number paragraph style. For example, for the figure numbers:

And you need to do this for the table numbers. Two named lists: one for each series, so that the numbers don't increment off of each other.

Maybe you want to figure out that first and then we can talk about the cross references again. But yes, if you look at that last screen grab, you can see that my numbers are updating on the figure caption and on the x-ref.

That makes perfect sense. Thank you. I already fixed the series numbering issue. Yes, now I see what is happening with your animation. That is exactly what I'm looking for. I look forward to your instruction. Much appreciated!
