Persistent Error in Adobe InDesign: ‘There Was an Error Updating the Artifact

Explorer ,
Jan 23, 2024 Jan 23, 2024

When I go to update a review link in InDesign, I keep getting this error message "there was an error updating the artifact". After that, the link does not work for most people. I am signed in to Adobe. Everything is up-to-date.... But this issue still persists. Can Adobe please fix this issue? It's emarassing when I go to send the review link to my leaders and they just get an error message when they try opening it.

I would like to add that my clients usually do not experience any problems opening the file with the link (even if I get the error message), but sometimes they do. Refreshing the page does do the trick in most cases if that happens. Now usually they are 'slow' in reacting on my update messages, so it is possible that they only experience problems opening the file when they react right away. I will keep an eye on that now, to be sure. So I support the idea of a lag/delay in the update process.

Hi All,

Thanks for your patience. The product team has tried multiple files and affected files shared by users. The issue is not reproducible for us even after multiple tries. It seems like an intermittent issue; it may work on the next or subsequent tries. Would you all mind trying "update content" once more to check if it works?

Also, the screen recording shared above by @Chris Tammar shows some unmapped comments. That shouldn't have happened. It seems an erroneous scenario led to unmapped co

Hello everyone,

Thanks for sharing the details. I've escalated this to the product team, and they are currently investigating the issue. I'll keep you posted and share an update as soon as I hear back.

Thanks for your patience.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your continued patience while we looked into this. I checked with the product team, and they've tested multiple files (including those shared by some of you) but weren’t able to reproduce the issue on their end, even after several tries. It seems to be intermittent, and in many cases, retrying the Update Content option works successfully on subsequent attempts.

The team also noticed in one of the shared recordings that unmapped comments were present, which might be cont

My original issue has not been fixed – can't updated the content to the exsisting review link.

Does the file size have anything to do with it? I deleted all the content in the file, and the link updated. Then I pasted the content back in, and it updated one more time. But after I made another change and tried to update the link again, it didn’t work.

@KathCau if you mean you are getting the error "There was an error updating the artifact", that is a known issue. In reality, the update does happen (as far as we know) despite the error message. Sometimes you will need to wait a few minutes and/or refresh the browser window before the update is visible. There is a separate topic about that here, in case you want to know more: https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/persistent-error-in-adobe-indesign-there-was-an-....

Hi @Anubhav M, I'm still consistently getting the “artifact” error just now. You have at least two issues going on with Share for Review, and this thread has combined them into one, making it difficult to know what has been fixed and what is still being worked on. To recap, if I share a new document with a few pages, it works. If I rename this document and reshare it, it works the first time. Then it's back to the “artifact” error each time there is another update. Thanks!

@Peter Nevalain, this is a known issue and has been going on for years. In reality, the update does happen (as far as we know) despite the error message. Sometimes you will need to wait a few minutes and/or refresh the browser window before the update is visible. There is an older topic about that here, in case you want to know more: https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/persistent-error-in-adobe-indesign-there-was-an-...

UPDATE: it seems Adobe has now merged both topics, which leads to some confusing replies now and then, but the link for both topics is now the same one as I mentioned above here.

Exactly, that’s how it has been before. It has updated despite the error. But now it doesn’t update. Previously, the update time has changed, so you could see that an update had still been made. But now it doesn’t change the date/time and no update occurs.

I have this bug for several years now, happening randomly.
Now again in v21.0
Sometimes it even kills the app.
Happens with or without unmapped comments (which happen if the object related to the comment is moved outside the visible board)
I'm trying to guess what happens with the background task panel, and it seems to break at 99%. Not sure why it breaks at that moment.
What would be helpful, before a fix is eventually published, would be to display logs in this background task panel.
At least, we could understand what works, and what breaks in our file...

Can the admins please unmark this issue as solved based on the latest feedback? This seems to be a major bug impacting many users, clearly this is not resolved yet.
