Occasionally, parts of my work will disappear from within inDesign. It doesn't show up in the regular screen or over print preview. It can be anything on that page: pictures, text boxes, backgrounds, lines, etc. I know it's still there cuz when I convert to pdf, it's all still there. But I can no longer edit the items that I can't see. And sometimes the items I can see, I can't click on it to move it around either. I've tried unlocking all on spread but still nothing. I use Windows 8.1 on a pc.

Hi Christina,
what's your exact version of InDesign on what operating system?
Will the issue go away if you save, close and reopen the document?
Thanks,

Ah. You already mentioned Windows 8.1.
Why are you not able to update to Windows 10 or Windows 11?

I have tried saving, closing, and reopening but still same. I work on a work provided laptop so it's still Windows 8.1. I'll submit a request to get it upgraded but not sure how long that will take.

Thanks. Which version of InDesign exactly?
To check that, open InDesign only, not a document, hold the Ctrl key, go to menu Help > About InDesign
The full version name should be available.

Thanks again.
Well, I can only tell that InDesign CC 2018 ( which is version 13.1 ) is running well on my Windows 10 machine with 32 GByte of RAM. With Windows 8.1 I have no experience at all. According to the specs listed in the linked page below it should work:
InDesign March 2018 (13.x) system requirements
Windows
Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor
Microsoft Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10*
* Not supported on Windows 10 version 1507.
1024 x 768 display (1280 x 800 recommended) with 32-bit video card; supports HiDPI display

Perhaps something with your graphic card? Just a wild guess.
Will all the contents show if you change the quality of the view?
Are other documents also affected?
If not I would try the following:
Export the document to IDML.
Open the IDML file as new InDesign document.
Save to a new name.

Oh wow exporting to IDML worked. All the missing items reappeared! Thank you! Do I just assume the file was too bloated? Corrupt?

accept now all the pages with missing items are now unclickable/uneditable. I tried ctrl+shift+left clicking on it and I tried object > unlock all on spread.

Can you share the InDesign document?
If the items on the pages are not on the master pages and they are not locked, or the layers are not locked, you should be able to select them.
Well, the document could be damaged.
