Placing an rtf file doesn't add enough pages

Community Beginner ,
Apr 10, 2025 Apr 10, 2025

Hello,

I am using Place + Shift to add text from an rtf file and auto add pages. It works fine up to page 201 then there are no more pages added, even though the text continues for several more pages.

I have tried several times with the same result at the same point. I have tried manually adding pages at the end but the text doesn't autoflow into them.

The missing text is in the rtf doc and I can't see anything that would stop the import at that particular point (it is just a continuation of the text, no section or chapter breaks at that point.) Any suggestions?

I went back to working on my original manuscript (in Scrivener) and made some changes then re-complied into rtf. This time, when I placed it in ID, all of the pages were there.

Do you use primary text frames or normal text frames on your master/parent?

Hi, I don't use any. I had them, but the Place adds them automatically and the ones in the Parent frames were wrongly placed (different to in their "template" position).

I've sorted it, there was Overset Text in the last frame so I Shift+Place'd again. perhaps there is a 200 page limit for the place function?

Although I had to add the pages manually 😞

Thankfully there were only a dozen or so

The only limit is 9999 pages per document - and 10 pages per Spread. Although, it was possible to create Spreads with more pages in CS4 or something.

Hi @S271978359c2v,

I gave this a test on my end using a long RTF file in InDesign 2025 on Windows 11, and the autoflow worked fine beyond page 201. It actually continued all the way to page 349 without any issues. Since I couldn’t reproduce the problem internally, it might be something specific within your file or setup that’s causing the behavior.

If you’re comfortable sharing, it would really help to take a look at your RTF file. Also, let me know if there’s any unique formatting around page 201, and whether you’re placing the text into a new document or an existing template. If you have the INDD file as well, feel free to share that too so we can dig a little deeper. You can drop a DM too(click my name > message), if confidential.

Looking forward to hearing back.

Abhishek

Hi @S271978359c2v,

I have just replied to your DM with the steps on how to share the files.

Also, when you have a moment, could you take a look at Willi’s question about whether you're using primary text frames or normal text frames on your parent/master pages?

Looking forward to hearing back!

Abhishek

I can take a look as well - in case @Abhishek Rao will be busy.

Hi @S271978359c2v,

Thanks so much for the update! I’m really glad to hear that re-compiling the manuscript helped and everything placed correctly in InDesign this time.

I also checked your DM and saw the link you shared. However, it’s currently asking me to request access to the files. I’ve gone ahead and sent the request just in case you’d still like me to take a look. If not, no worries at all.

Feel free to reach out anytime if anything else comes up.

Abhishek
