I have a document set up to print as a booklet with 5.5x8.5 pages on a spread. It looks fine in preview but the .ps file has the wrong page orientation. I've attached the Summary txt from Print Booklet.

You need to install the Adobe PDF 9.0 PPD:

our printer does not allow me to print booklet from inDesign. (we do not have a fiery for spooling) but I founda solution if you just hit print. Then in the settings on the printer side choose booklet and saddle stitch. See if that helps.

Export a proper PDF and then use Acrobat's booklet feature to print it.

I left out important details! I want the PDF already set up as a booklet so the public can print it. I'm printing the booklet to PostScript so I can convert it to PDF. I've done it before, so I know it's possible.

What makes you so sure they want it that way? Most people will just read it on screen and providing that way will make that quite difficult.

You're failing miserably at that. Again, most of them will have zero interest in printing it.

Printing to postscript is a 1990s method of PDF creation and page imposition is a printer's responsibility.

FYI @BobLevine, I had the same question as in this post because my printer doesn't do double sided. So I need a pdf version of the booklet first before printing and had issues with orientation. While advice is always welcome, you don't need to criticize the poster just because you don't know the actual answer to the post. Thank you to @k8.peterson for actually answering the question!

Your users woud have to print both sides of the sheet exactly centered, collate & fold the printed signatures, and staple in the middle—are they really capable or willing to doing that?

If people want to print it, they can use the booklet printing function from Acrobat or their own printer driver, but still have it in reader order on the screen.

I still need to be able to print a booklet to PostScript from InDesign and have it formatted correctly.

Make sure your under "SETUP", you have "device independent" or a preferable preset that uses the printed sheet size that will fit a spread - 2 book pages on 1 sheet of paper in that Setup dialog screen. Please see the following screenshots.

Your page orientation is wrong. Flip it to the opposite and your book pages will fit 2up to a sheet. You can see it under Setup.

I have attached a screenshot of the setup window with what it would read if you were using the printer driver - showing page size and orientation for reference.

Thank you. Maybe I have the wrong printer driver, but InDesign won't let me set up Portrait as 11x8.5: "The value must be between 3 in and 8.5 in."

This worked for me too! Who knew adding a PPD file from 2016 would be the solution... after FAR too long of digging.  Instructions here and copied below: https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/save-as-pdf-options-not.html

  • Quit InDesign.
  • Navigate to /Applications/Adobe Indesign *Your version*/Presets/.
  • Within the presets folder, create a folder named PPDs (the folder name is case-sensitive).

  • Control-click the following link and choose Save Link As to download the Acrobat 9 PPD:
    Acrobat 9 PPD

  • Place a copy of the downloaded PPD into the folder you created in step 3.

I'm on a Mac. I wanted to get around the issues of saving a PDF in booklet layout from InDesign or Acrobat. In both cases I couldn't because I got this pop-up: "Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose File > Save." and when I saved the file a .ps file the orientation, after I opened the .ps file in Acrobat Distiller, was always not oriented correctly. Like Gidget5's issue. When I did the instructions that k8.peterson listed above I was able to print as booklet from InDesign as .ps file that was correctly horizontal in layout when I opened it in Distiller. Ugh this was a frusting one has been for years for me.
