Problem pasting text into inDesign

New Here ,
Dec 11, 2024 Dec 11, 2024

Hello! I'm trying to add a prologue by copying and pasting the text from my Word Document into my inDesign file. I can get the first few paragraphs to show up on the prologue page, but instead of the rest autoflowing to the page directly after, it skips and cuts into chapter 1, so it's not in order at all.

It should flow like this:

Page 1: Prologue opener

Page 2-3ish: Rest of prologue

Instead it's like this:

Page 1: Prologue opener

Page 2: Chapter 1 opener

Page 3: Rest of prologue

I'm so confused.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Try this: in a fresh ID document, Place the whole Word document using the Place command and the "Show Import Options" menu (a checkbox on the Place file list menu). Then cut and paste the desired text from that working document to your project one.

If you still have things coming in out of order, it's most likely because you have somehow scrambled the order of the pages, text frames and flow. You'd need to fix that  — easiest way is to start with a wholly fresh document — to straighten out the order.

Report back with your progress and we can probably help more. Word import is... not always a completely simple, linear thing.
