Questions about using Hebrew with InDesign/Mac

I have been re-acquainting myself with Hebrew typography and with the current InDesign. I have run into some anomalies and wonder if I am missing the obvious.

  1. Is there a way to assign a paragraph style in a table, so that columns that are in Hebrew, wrap and treat punctuation correctly (or did I just answer my question--assign a Hebrew paragraph style and I'll get what I am looking for - I'll test while I see if the other questions make sense)?
  2. Using a Mac, I find the keyboard layout that works for Word on the Mac does not work--the complex rules for generating a vav-dagesh or vav-holem aren't needed, for instance, as InDesign appears to be using a different layout scheme. Likewise for shin/sin. Just to be sure I am doing the right thing, where is this documented?
  3. I cannot find a key-combo for a qamats gadol (U05B8) in the layout that I have. In truth, it is not clear to me that the fonts I am using contain such a character--looking at the glyph chart, I'm not seeing anything obvious. So, this is really a two-part question: Is there a way to get a qamatz gadol, and are there good fonts that contain the same?
  4. Likewise for a few trup characters that I know are in at least one of my fonts (Adobe Hebrew?) - are there good fonts that contain same, and how do I access the characters (other than using the glyph tool)?

Hello Aridavidow!

2. There is a software to add a nikkud into Hebrew text in Indesign quickly, "Rav Nakad". But I've been told it works only in Windows and not in Mac.

3. You probably mean qamats qatan. You can copy it from here: חׇ

The free font "David" can display it, and there are also special fonts of font companies for such signs like qamats qatan and sheva na etc.

Hi @aridavidow:

This is not my area of expertise but let's start here: do you have the English Hebrew version of InDesign installed?

If not, here's how: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/access-install-hebrew-arabic-indesign-illustrator-CC.html

Here are some additional resources you may find helpful:

Yup. Not the problem - I'm experiencing a different Hebrew layout between Indesign/Mac and Word/Mac. For Hebrew in general, no problem.

1. You can create custom cell styles with a paragraph style assigned to it. If the Hebrew column is always the same. You can then make a table style to auto handle the cell styles.

2. Can't help with this sorry.

3.a Under Glyphs under the Recently Used there is a search bar. If you put 05B8 it'll search that current font for it.
3.b Google fonts seem to have some Hebrew fonts available.
4. Using GREP you can access Glyphs by there Unicode this can be done by \x{05B8}

That is useful to know that I want a custom cell style. I have dozens of Hebrew fonts - was wondering if someone was aware of open source or commercial professional quality fonts that have a qamats gadol. It's a funky question - not clear to me how many places I'd use it, but knowing that it is used in relatively modern Hebrew printing for some pronunciation, I'l continue to ask around. Thank you.
